Lieutenant Joseph is running away from the Japanese as they invade Burma during WWII. He has been shot in the stomach and quickly collapses behind an overturned tree. His friend Lieutenant Potts finds him and gives him cover as he calls for a evacuation team to rescue Joseph. Joseph asks Potts to hand a note he had written to a woman he met a night previous. Potts says he will not give the woman the note because he wants Joseph to do it himself when he is well. As Joseph's physical state begins to worsen the two are nearly discovered by a Japanese soldier before Potts fires and kills the soldier. Lieutenant Potts and Joseph both begin to question the reasoning for the war and whether they are any different than the opposing forces of the war. Joseph begins to lose too much blood and begins to turn cold. Potts wraps his arms around Joseph, asking if he could see any soldiers coming. Potts then kills mercy kills Joseph when he sees a firework explode in the sky. Potts begins to sob when suddenly he is pulled to his feet by the evacuation team. Potts takes the note out of Joseph's hand before running to safety.
