On June 24, 1610, Grand Chief Henri Membertou, a chief of the Mi'kmaq people from 1550 to 1611, along with 20 members of his family, was baptized by French Jesuit missionaries. Beyond embracing the Christian faith and forging an alliance with the French, Grand Chief Membertou helped set Canadian history along a path marked by welcome and acceptance. Drawing upon the June 24-27, 2010 celebrations that commemorated 400 years since this event, this documentary explores the rich history and culture of the Mi'kmaq people prior to contact with the Europeans through to the present day. It addresses traditional ways of life, ceremonial and celebratory practices, spirituality, religion, recreation, prejudice, the impact of Residential Schools as well as contemporary struggles with substance abuse and suicide.
