Jamaica, where life is rarely fast paced, is a famous and popular vacation paradise in the Caribbean, mostly known as the home of Reggae music and Bob Marley, dreadlocks and pushcarts. According to public legend, near the end of the last century, when the markets began to grow bigger, the town of May Pen, 80km outside Kingston, gave birth to the idea of a steerable wooden wheelbarrow. This unique form of muscle-driven vehicle that can be hardly overlooked is usually made out of simple materials, and in general, out of what is available at the moment. Standing up courageously to their motorised competitors, pushcarts not only serve as an affordable means of transportation, but through simple or elaborate modifications, they can also serve as deliverers and even kiosks and kitchen carts in the hustle and bustle of Coronation Market. Obviously, in a country that loves fast races, and in contrast to a laid-back, decelerated lifestyle, sometimes, the pushcart can be transformed into a status symbol in May Pen's Great pushcart Derby, where stamina, strength and pushing technique will judge who is the best of the best.
