L'Derry 1976 - Alister Hollins has two things going for him, he was funny, always acting the eejit making people laugh, the other, he was the best guitarist the divided City had ever seen. While the rioting, bombing and shootings of the civil unrest of 'The Troubles' were at their height, Al took his big chance and auditioned for a local up and coming band whose lead guitarist had been arrested. Only one major problem, the four remaining members, Micky, Eamon, Terry and Haidan were all Catholics and he was a Protestant with an Orange Man for a father. In Al's view music transcended religion, in fact music was his religion and when he played Thin LIzzy's version of 'Whiskey in the jar' the other guys, some begrudgingly, would come to agree. If they let him join their band there would be repercussions from both sides, but with Al they would be better than good, they would be in for a shot at the big time. With only a few months until Phil Coulter's Talent Contest at the Rialto they needed as much rehearsal and as many gigs as they could get, more importantly they had to win, Phil was offering a major record deal. All they needed was a great song and a new name, something that stood out, something that could take them all the way Amethyst was born.
