From 1944 to 1986, millions of tons of raw uranium ore was mined out of the Navajo Nation for use by the US government. The legacy left behind after these years of heavy metal extraction is one of pollution, death and despair. Thousands of Navajo miners faced devastating health issues caused by direct exposure during the mining process. Decades after mining ended, the Navajo are still living with environmental consequences resulting from grossly severe corporate negligence. Over 520 unremediated open-pit mines remain across America's largest indigenous land. Parts of the main aquifers of this expansive region are now tainted with dangerous levels of uranium and arsenic. This makes Navajo people 67 times more likely than other Americans to live without access to running water or a toilet. Academic and health officials are currently working to address the various levels of contamination, while the tribal government coordinates clean-ups with the EPA. However so much is needed to be done. 'Radioactive Nation' tells the story of vast pollution left behind after years of uranium mining. Our film will work to educate the population about these issues and promote assistance for the thousands of people currently living with limited access to clean water due to past unregulated environmental exploitation's. The mistakes of the past shouldn't keep the Navajo people from a better future.
