Nirmal and Aruna are the children of a rich businessman, Mr. Banerjee. They live an affluent life, Nirmal wasting time and money with friends in the bar. Bijoy, the son of Mr.Banerjee's old friend, comes asking for shelter after his father's death. He is a poor but high principled man. Aruna and Bijoy falls in love. When they ask for permission to marry, Mr. Banerjee orders Bijoy out of the house and threatens to disown his daughter because of Bijoy's poor conditions. Nirmal marries Mili who is of own status and very modern. Mr.Banerjee dies reconciled with Aruna. Nirmal and Mili both lead "modern"lives. Nirmal comes home drunk nad regularly fights with his wife. He's soon bankrupt. He sells his house and his wife divorces him. After some time, he comes to live with Aruna and Bijoy. their happiness amidst the poverty and sacrifices for his comfort bring a change in him. He falls in love with Parul, their poor neighbour. Parul misunderstands his advances. After an argument with Bijoy, Nirmal leaves. Parul realizes her mistakes. Her parents want Nirmal as their son-in-law. Bijoy finds Nirmal at last and persuades him to come back. Nirmal marries Parul, gets a job, and makes a fresh, happy start.
