In a villa by the sea lives a carefree couple: Eva (Danièle Gegauff) and Yvan (Jean-Pierre Kalfon). They have three children. The eldest, Axel, is eleven years old and is distinguished by a disturbing beauty. When rumors of war amplify, Eva, a gentle woman-child, must find in her the energy to support her husband, Yvan, suddenly very shaken by a dream which, every night, comes to haunt and torture him. Locked in a cellar, he is physically broken by executioners who want him to talk. But Yvan doesn't understand what it is, doesn't know what we want him to say. In addition, he is amazed by his own resistance which allows him to withstand all blows. Except, however, those of a woman whom her torturers, in desperation, sent. Convinced - still in his dream - that he is going to die, Yvan prefers to let himself go one last time to fall in love, and he becomes so with his torturer. Little by little, Yvan gives up his own personality for that of his dreams. And the one of his dreams - pitiful creature at the bottom of his dungeon - dreams in turn. She dreams of a villa by the sea where he, Yvan, lives carefree with his wife Eva. Dream and reality will then meet violently and the world glimpsed by Yvan turns out to be a premonition: the villa does indeed contain a cellar which awaits the tortured people of tomorrow's war. Away from this overwhelming vertigo, someone knows and can bear witness: Axel.
