Jailed captures the life of a character who has been ignored in narratives of Brazilian prisons until today. A character who's life is affected in unavoidable ways by their profession: the jailer. Through the testimony of different generations of correctional officers (retired officers from the time of the massacre of Carandiru, officers who were present in the 2006 prison rebellions, and active jailers nowadays) and testimonies from their families, former convicts, and other professionals in the Brazilian prison system, the film dives into the day-to-day, living experiences of these characters, analyzing and reflecting on an element of Brazilian reality that does not make the headlines. On top of the fear of kidnapping, the risk of escapes and massive riots, the film shows the daily life of the jailers outside of the prison walls: the small and major dramas that mark the lives of people that, having committed no crimes, are also spending their lives behind bars. Jailed is a trip to the underworld of Brazilian prisons, seen through the eyes of anonymous heroes guarding the gates of hell that society chooses to ignore.
