A family lives in poverty in Asansol, an industrial slum area on the fringes of Calcutta. Brojo, the father, is a village man with little education; he cannot find a job and subsists by selling paper bags. His wife Pritilata and daughters Juthi and Lati face a life of constant hardship. Pritilata becomes fascinated by their uncommunicative neighbour, a destitute beggar, whose sole material possession is a bag that she suspects contains rice. One morning, unable to contain her curiosity, she ventures into the beggar's room to examine the bag. But the beggar returns and catches her in the act. They struggle, and the old man suddenly dies. That night Pritilata is able to serve rice to her family.
