Spirited little orphan Jane Eyre, is sent to a boarding school by her heartless aunt, but she soon finds love among her friends and teachers. Years later, Jane obtains a position as governess to the young daughter of Edward Rochester, a wealthy widower. The two fall in love and become engaged, but Edward is disturbed one day by the arrival of Raoul Daquin, his wife's brother, with a mysteriously veiled woman. Recognizing her as his mad wife Valerie, whom his mother had years before reported dead, Edward locks the unfortunate woman in a tower while he tries to have the marriage annulled. Having learned that he is free to marry Jane, Edward proceeds with the wedding, but on the night of the ceremony, Valerie bursts into the room in a frenzy. As Jane sadly prepares to depart, Valerie dashes into the woods and drowns herself in a lake, whereupon Jane returns to marry Edward.
