Samuel Sweetland, a widowed, prosperous farmer, is lonely after his daughter marries and moves away. His late wife, Tibby, had asked him to remarry, so with the help of his housekeeper, Minta, he creates a list of potential brides. With her trusty help, Samuel courts four women, trying desperately to win their affection, but something always seems to get in his way. Meanwhile, Minta secretly falls in love with him.
