The Night Bird (1928)

Kid Davis, the contender for the light heavyweight championship, meets Madelena, a young Italian girl who has run away from home rather than marry a man she does not love. She insists on going home with Davis and spends the night chastely in his apartment. The two fall in love, but Gleason, Davis's manager, convinces Madelena that marriage would interfere with the boxer's promising career. She sadly returns home, and Davis enters the ring, disheartened and unprepared. He is nearly defeated when Madelena's younger brother appears at ringside and begs Davis to rescue the girl from her arranged marriage. Davis quickly knocks his opponent unconscious and runs to Madalena's house to stop the ceremony. He then insists that the wedding can only continue if he is the bridegroom. It does, and he is.
