While Ozu originally intended to title the film "Tokyo Twilight", studio executives opted for a title emphasizing the theme of motherhood, prevalent in Japanese cinema at the time of its release. Ozu mentioned that this early work holds personal significance for him as his father passed away during the production of this film.
