Sergeant Gene Autry (Gene Autry) is welcomed home from world-war-two by his salty housekeeper The Commodore (Dorothy Vaughan) and three cowhand pals Jerry (Jerry Scoggins), Bert (Bert Dodson) and Fred (Fred Martin)) who have bought Gene a race horse as a surprise homecoming gift. However, unknown to the Cass County Boys , the horse has been stolen from a neighboring rancher Kit Barlow (Peggy Stewart). Tracking down the horse-thief that sold his cowhands a stolen horse, Gene finds a horse trainer, Rick Malloy (William Henry), his crippled ex-jockey brother Ted (Johnny Duncan) and their eccentric pal Droopy Stearns (Sterling Holloway. Ted's career has been cut short by injuries suffered in an "accident" by the trickery of Kit's unscrupulous horse-trainer Cal Young (Tristram Coffin), who has an agenda to make sure Kit's horse does not win the upcoming Queen's Derby, which she needs to win to pay off her debts. Gene's guidance and help give's Ted the confidence in his ability to ride in a horse race again - as the jockey riding Kit's horse in the Queen's Derby.
