Blood of the Beasts (1949)

This short was meant to expose the horror and terror of French slaughterhouses in the 1920's. For this reason, it is an important film, but obviously a very violent and gory one as well. Animals are murdered brutally and graphically. Not for the faint of heart at all.

Horses, sheep, bulls, etc. get decapitated, axed and shot. Lots of blood gushes out of the animals, which, even though is in black and white, is nonetheless still quite disturbing. Some animals twitch after they've been murdered, and it's all the more horrifying that the workers do it so casually.

Workers smoke on the job.

The film's main theme is the contrast between the peace of outdoor France and the horror of slaughterhouses. While it is a very upsetting and gory film, it is also a document of history, similarly to Upton Sinclair's The Jungle.

The film is very much not intended for children, but a teenager could likely handle the onscreen violence and be properly equipped to understand the themes of the film. One can generally assume that any child who would even be aware of the film would likely do fine with it.
