The story focuses on the failed attempt of the egyptian queen Cleopatra to save her empire and, from that perspective, explores her ties with the roman emperor Julius Caesar and the general Mark Antony. Directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, the film won 4 Oscars and proved to be a milestone in Hollywood cinema for several reasons: it was the most expensive film ever produced at the time, for its technical and costume design, as well as for extra-cinematic reasons, such as the romance between Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.
