1960. 12 years after the declaration of independence, Chris Marker travels to Israel to shoot his 4th film. Not without humor and poetry, he interprets the disparate "signs" of then and now: the conquered desert, the dark adventure of the Exodus, the Orthodox Jews of the Ghetto, the Wailing Wall, the kibbutz, the Sabbath, the childhood of Israel and its children - already regimented but carefree and nourished by hope.
