The devil himself visits the world with his horns under his hat and his horse's foot hidden in his stiffly ironed trouser leg. He is pleased that the dance around the golden calf or - better - the hunt for more and more money is driving people around and making them unhappy. For his own pleasure, he wants to make another example: The devil drops a purse in front of the clochards Barbarossa, Clown and Dürst, who are basking in life on a park bench. He haunts their dreams. He tells them the lucky number with which they can win a ten-thousand-dollar sum at roulette in Constance. Gripped by greed for money, the three bums immediately drive to the casino on Lake Constance; there the clever Barbarossa rips off his two buddies without restraint. With the money he has won, the crook heads straight for sunny Ticino, but Dürst and Clown follow his heels. Once in Lugano, Barbarossa's heart leaps when he checks into the luxury hotel with the young hitchhiker Elke. Meanwhile, Dürst meets a crazy English woman who almost makes him a landlord, while Clown finds his happiness elsewhere: He wants to rehabilitate a small circus to finally realize his childhood dream. But in all this, the three oddball journeymen also get a unique chance to outgrow greed and egoism and cheat the devil.
