Interviewees are Humphrey Carpenter (Tolkien biographer); Priscilla Tolkien (daughter); John Tolkien (son); Rayner Unwin (publisher); Professor Tom Shippey (Leeds University); and Paul Gregory (an artist inspired by the works of Tolkien). Each contributor discusses the life and work of the author J. R. R. Tolkien, who is best known as the writer of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. They touch on Tolkien's early life in Birmingham and his later life in Oxford. There is extensive use of archive stills. We also see shots of Oxford and the exterior of Tolkien's house in the city. Tolkien's continuing popularity after his death is illustrated with clips from an animated version of The Lord of the Rings and we also see a group of children in a school playing a Tolkien video game on a Sinclair computer.
