In early-1950s Aegina, Callirrhoe, a young, orphaned girl who works in cruel Jimmy's tavern, has a chance encounter with chivalrous Agis, a handsome contractor entrusted with the task of constructing the island's pier. As one thing leads to another, the two fall madly in love; however, their happiness is short-lived, as Agis has to return to Athens, unbeknownst to him that Callirrhoe is already pregnant with his daughter. Of course, when her secret comes to light, Jimmy shows the poor woman the door, and having no relatives or friends, desperate Callirrhoe has no other choice but to seek a better future in the bustling and faceless capital. There, like a fish out of water, Callirrhoe is taken in by the promises of the duplicitous, soft-spoken procurer, Vagos, who offers her food and shelter in return for her silence, cooperation, and absolute obedience. Now, a life of forced prostitution awaits Callirrhoe. Can she spare her child the pain and humiliation she had to endure?
