For 310 days a Russian cosmonaut was left in space onboard the space station Mir. During this period in 1991-1992 the Soviet Union fell appart. When Sergei Krikalev landed the hammer and seal on his uniform had lost it's political significance, and his native country had changed name, president and ideology.
