Mohammed Atta, death pilot from New York and suspected head of the Hamburg terrorist cell, was briefly in the sights of German investigators even before the attack on September 11, 2001. The recorded conversation, according to the investigators in retrospect, sounded so harmless that this lead was not pursued further. In addition, it was not possible to identify Atta at the time. Only after the attacks in New York and Washington did the investigators realize that they were already on the trail of the top terrorist.
