In war willing or otherwise there are no winners everyone, in some way, becomes a victim. Flight lieutenant James Callan a Lancaster bomber pilot wakes to find himself trapped - still dazed and in pain he is unable to move, unaware of where he is or how he got there. His caretaker a French widower, a doctor - Madame. Madame finds solace in the fact she has found a companion, a person to share the loneliness, sadness and devastation that war brings, a companion who needs her as much as she needs him. Callan discovers the truth of his predicament and the depth of Madame's feelings about the war. He learns that alliances and sympathies have no place in war, the painful consequences of which can never be accurately predicted.
