One day, in the impoverished Brazil of the Nordeste, a boy told us with a smile, "I don't have anything, all I have is my life." These words had a lasting effect on us. Where do people who only have their own lives draw their strength and resistance from? The film tells the universal story of two children trying to find their place in a brutal world. They ask themselves all kinds of existential questions. This intimacy with their thoughts lies at the heart of the film. The camera aims to be light-footed and to sense every emotion, as close as possible to the faces while looking deep into the eyes. What seethes within them is in the imprint of a humanity that we share with them, that links us to them and that is vital for us.
