They come from Romanian villages and the slums of Skopje: legendary Roma orchestras from Eastern Europe, singers and brass bands from the Balkans. They live in remote villages and in the chaotic Roma neighborhoods of the cities. For decades this music was cut off from the rest of the world behind the Iron Curtain. But there has been a spirit of optimism since the 1990s. Emigrants from the Balkan region have carried the sounds of their homeland into the world.
