Gwendoline, the wife of wealthy businessman Ralph Partridge, is bored despite all the prosperity in her marriage and feels neglected. She compensates for her frustration by buying innumerable 'works of art', mostly kitsch and trinkets, at auctions. This goes on until the house is full and Mr. Partridge has had enough. He demands that the stuff be removed at last. This is how Gwendoline realizes how much Ralph controls the life of the family. She finds support from a young cleaning lady and now takes the initiative herself.
