The woodland Indians of North America historically lived in the northeast and southeast regions of the continent. Their traditional cultures were nearly wiped out by disease, conflict, and forced assimilation from centuries of European colonization. Today, however, several woodland Indians, such as artists Patricia Gardner (Mohawk) and Mary Lee Prescott (Oneida), have managed to draw upon the remnants of such culture for inspiration and success, for themselves and others.
