As uncompleted grieving made men feel like empty shells, the gay community, not the physicians, not the researchers, and certainly not the politicians, founded a path for others to follow in the fight against AIDS. Their ability to organize, advocate, and if need be, yell and protest, led to the advances in treatment we have today. Their achievements would help pave the way for other patient groups in the future, which would go on to adopt some of the same policies and tactics as AIDS activist.
