On his death-bed, Bombay-based wealthy Rai Bahadur Gulshan Rai asks his adopted daughter, Roopa, to maintain everyone's lifestyles as if he were alive. After his passing, everyone is notified, including village-based Dharamdas, who is being paid Rs.500/- every month to look after Rai's mentally unstable paternal nephew, Ram, for the last 15 years since he was 10 years of age. This request places the former in a predicament as he did not notify the family that Ram had accidentally passed away five years ago, so he could continue to collect the monthly allowance. He then travels to Bombay, hires a look-alike stunt-man, Kishanlal, offers to pay him Rs.1000/- for impersonating Ram. Kishanlal agrees to do so but will soon challenges when he will fall in love with Roopa but cannot reveal his true identity, while Film Director Bharadwaj will notify the police about his real identity. Both are aware that if they are caught and convicted, they could face up to seven years rigorous imprisonment.
