The main characters of the film are named Zhenya and Volodya: they are young guys from wealthy families, they have been friends since childhood, both work in the company of Volodya's father and are fond of motor-sports. Volodya has a fiancee, Olga, but, as Zhenya learns, she is getting married solely for selfish purposes. The friend refuses to believe it, and then Zhenya decides to prevent the tragedy on his own. Ruthlessly and publicly, he disrupts the wedding, loses a friend and breaks the heart of Tanya, Olga's sister, who is selflessly and secretly in love with him. The whole story takes place against the backdrop of vicissitudes within Zhenya's family: her mother left her and her sister Sveta in the care of her father, as a result Sveta is withdrawn and pathologically unsure of herself, and the domineering father is constantly dissatisfied with his children. Literally from the first frames of "The Duel," the audience becomes clear that this film is a modern take on the textbook story from "Eugene Onegin." Time has changed the circumstances, the motives of actions, the style of clothing, the language the heroes speak... But there are still two boys and two girls in the center of the story and everyone wants to be happy - this configuration will never become outdated.
