Surviving Sandy (2012)

When Hurricane Sandy hit Long Island's shores on October 29, 2012, the damage was extensive. The Long Island Railroad was shutdown, schools were closed, gasoline shortages produced long lines and high anxiety and nearly one million residents were out of power. We at Newsday covered every facet of the storm. We were in the field before, during and after peak of the storm. We waited on gas lines, waded through debris and visited residents who were desperately trying to recover. After the first week of the storm, we produced, Surviving Sandy, a look at how Long Islanders coped with the story and its aftermath.
