Peter is laying in bed, in the middle of a nightmare when he is suddenly awakened by the sound of a loud thunder rumble. He begins his daily monotonous routine. Making his way to the kitchen to grab a bite to eat, his mother, Mary and sister, Lily wish him Happy Birthday while trying to hide something from him. Mary and Lily surprise him with not just a birthday cake but also a human being he dreads; his uncle, Rob. Unable to recompose himself, Peter is in his backyard, muttering "I'm fine, I'm okay" over and over again when he is once again caught off-guard by Rob. Rob has a surprise for him; alcohol, that he sneakingly gives Peter. Peter wants to escape. Hence, he excuses himself, claiming to be hungry. At the dinner table, Rob places a photo of Peter's childhood right in front of him, bringing back the terror that only he, Peter, is aware of. As the 4 continue to eat, Rob decides to present a joke that unexpectedly backfires, resulting in Peter storming out of the dining room. Rob gives a nonchalant shrug and strikes a conversation with Lily. Lily is stunned. Lily brings Peter a piece of his birthday cake while he sits by himself out on the patio. Upon confronting Peter, he has a major outburst, unable to say anything. Peter recalls his abusive past, going deeper and deeper. In the midst of his outbreak, Peter stops and takes out a bottle of alcohol and empties it. Mary overhears everything and is absolutely shattered.
