Mario, a 9-year-old boy, is heartbroken since the death of his mother. Drawing pictures is the only way for him to cope and express his grief. Unfortunately this causes Mario to neglect his schoolwork. Sergio, his father, has taken a second job selling balloons to cover the medical bills he still owes as a result of his wife's illness. Mario's most vivid memory of his mother is the star-shaped balloon she gave him on his birthday - a moment captured in an old photograph. The child draws star shapes everywhere he can, including his homework. One day, after a long day's work with his father, young Mario goes home and fills star-shaped balloons using his father's helium - a dangerous thing he's forbidden to do. When Sergio discovers this, he's angered and disappointed. However, his heart breaks when he sees the old photograph of Mario and his mother- his son's behavior is finally clear to him. Together, the father and son fill balloons with helium, sharing a magical moment which elevates them above the city and allows them to experience Mom's presence in an unexpected way.
