During the first few months of the great war, recruiting for the British army was a common sight in every town in the country, if you were unable to find work, you could guarantee a living wage by volunteering for service, which is what Tom and Cal, two jobless friends in Cork City in 1914 decide to do, they must now go home and face their wives with the news.
