Max Arthur Conrad Jr. was born in Winona, Minnesota on January 21, 1903. He attended Cotter High School in Winona. Max became interested in flying at an early age eventually starting his own flying school. One of his pupils was Art Donahue who would go on to be one other outstanding American pilots for the British RAF. Art was later killed in the war. Max also had a brother who died in a plane crash. Beginning in the late 50's Max started to set various speed records. In June 1959 Max flew from Casablanca to Los Angeles establishing a record that would stand until 1987. Max would hold 9 records. He was awarded the Louis Breon medal for aviation. Max and his wife Betty would have 10 children. Max passed away in Summit, New Jersey on April 3, 1979
