Dan was born in Pasadena, California, and started working in film in elementary school. He and his fellow fifth grade classmates created a short film called "Sherman's Dilemma" that was awarded a Cine Award, were flown to Washington DC for a week, and taken to the White House to show the film to the Carters. He went on to study acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, and Improv at Second City. Dan has also received training in stand-up comedy from Greg Dean, comedy writing from Gene Perret, and the Meisner Approach from Larry Silverberg.
