Simon Says self-released two records which got the attention of manager Jeff Saltzman who set them up with Cake's producer Mark Needham. Needham then and got them signed to Hollywood Records in July 1998. In 1999, they released their major-label debut, Jump Start, which landed them two hit modern rock singles. The follow-up album Shut Your Breath scored them a third radio hit. In 2001, Simon Says parted ways with Hollywood Records over promotional issues and changed their name to Key to Arson. It was not too long after that drummer, Mike Johnston, left the band. He was then replaced by Dave "Stixx" Marich. In 2004, Key to Arson announced the completion of their album titled Light 'Em Up, but shortly thereafter, the band formally broke up. Zac Diebels and Matt Franks eventually formed the band Automatic Static.
