George Hughes grew up in Wimborne, Dorset, England, UK, where he attended Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School. Leaving at sixteen, he started working for a landscaping firm. After stints as a courier for a haulage company, a machinist and a barman he went into teaching. In 2003 he co- founded Freefall Productions and Freefall Records with Michael Shemilt and shot his first documentary film, Volitera Live (2004). After making several more documentaries for Freefall Records bands he directed his first short, The Mover (2005) and his first non-documentary feature, Remnants (2007). In 2013, he moved to London and concentrated on screen- writing for several years before returning to the south coast and independent filmmaking in 2020. His brother is the guitarist Sam Hughes.
