A famous Australian Jazz musician, Gary Costello was a native of Melbourne. He was one of Australia's most highly regarded contemporary jazz bassists, winning two ARIA awards during his successful career. He played with the Elizabethan Trust (now Orchestra Victoria) before turning his attention to jazz and improvisational music and also appeared with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and performed with highly respected groups such as The Browne, Costello, and Duggan Trio, he was also well known for his membership of the Steve Vizard Show band and was an active founding member of The Australian Art Orchestra. Costello's concert career included performing with international music stars such as Milt Jackson, Herb Ellis, Warren Vache, Brandford Marsalis, Kenny Kirkland, Ricki Ford, Johnny Griffin, Urbie Green, Al Cohn, and Ralph Sutton and Australian stars including Don Burrows, Kerrie Biddell, Paul Grabowsky, James Morrison, Anthony Warlow, Vince Jones and Dale Barlow. His touring career includes 1988 United States tour with The Australian Jazz Orchestra (formed for the Australian bicentennial) consisted of Australia's premier jazz artists, 1995 tours on Germany and England with the Paul Grabowsky Sextet and 1996 and 2000 tours of Australian Art Orchestra in India and Europe respectively. He also was teaching jazz bass in the Scotch College in Melbourne. Gary Costello sadly and timely passed on 20th of December in 2006 from natural causes.
