Dan Tonkin was born in Derby on November 19th 1984. An erratic childhood stretching from the midlands to London to Hong Kong before returning to the UK to an international boarding school in Surrey. He graduated from Met Film School in 2008, mentored under writers such as Philippa Goslett (Little Ashes, Mary Magdalene) & DoP Paul Wheeler (Inspector Morse, The Queen's Nose), where he completed his first professional short films. In 2011 Dan Tonkin's education jumped through Guildford College graduating Philosophy, English, History, Visual Arts, Media & Politics before then completing a BA (hons) degree in scriptwriting followed by a masters in cinematography, shortly after his completion of his most notable success; an original, experimental, interactive film; Survivor, where viewers got to decide from multi-linear scripted decision points. Nominated for a Royal Television Society Award in 2017, Tonkin has continued to mentor on programmes such as the BFI Film Academy to re-energise the practical skills and employability of younger filmmakers, working alongside some notable producers whilst continuing as a field practitioner in film, TV & advertising.
