Mathias Walter is a French filmmaker, cinematographer and photographer. After studying American literature and cinema, he worked as a fashion photographer for ten years. His work was featured in French Elle, WE, Madame Figaro and Lucky Magazine and appeared in advertising campaigns by Publicis, DDB, Saatchi & Saatchi, for brands such as Dior, Chantal Thomass, Paule Ka, Nikon, Sisley. During this time, his interest in cinema grew more and more and he experimented some methods mixing cinematography and still images. As a cinematographer, he started in advertising but soon turned to feature films and narratives. He focused on documentary filmmaking in 2008 with projects such as Cinderella's Dream, a behind-the-scenes look at the world of fashion modeling. The same year, he wrote and directed a short film called Fatale (Lethal), shot in 35 mm. In 2009 he made his second short film, Saudade, about memory and melancholia. Then came Pola, Apparences (Appearances). Three of his short films were selected in festivals. In 2014 and 2015, he attended an excellent school on « narrative non-fiction » documentary films called Les Ateliers Varan in Paris, created by Jean Rouch in the 60s, one of the first documentary filmmakers inventing the « cinéma du réel » and inspiring Jean-Luc Godard for his ideas and the « nouvelle vague ». The liberty of filming and creating teacher there gave him wings for his oncoming projects ! He writes, directs and shoots his own projects ever since. His latest film, Lea, tells the story of two lovers having to deal with love and... death. It is featured in an independent theater in Paris in June 2018, le Saint André des Arts.
