Melissa Dowler was born in Boston, and is a graduate of Boston University's College of Communication, where she majored in journalism. After living in London for most of her twenties, she returned to Boston, before moving to Los Angeles. Along with husband, Director of Photography Tom Dowler, she started Long Haul Films. Her debut documentary short, 24 Hours At The South Street Diner, was selected to IFF Boston and the Woods Hole Film Festival. Her first documentary feature, Adele and Everything After, premiered at the Cleveland International Film Festival, and went on to win awards at Northwestfest, Harrisburg-Hershey, Scruffy City, Long Beach Indie and others, and was picked up for distribution by Gravitas Ventures. Dowler is also co-founder of She Sees, a non-profit dedicated to introducing filmmaking to young women, particularly young women of color.
