Ranjith Joseph, is a Sri-Lankan born, Canadian filmmaker who moved to Canada at a young age. Being always fascinated by art and Tamil literature, he pursued a career in film studies and graduated from Tribes Film Institute. Later, he moved to Chennai, India to further strengthen his knowledge in Tamil cinema. He worked as an assistant director on various sets with the reputable south Indian directors. He assisted Sasi , an eminent Tamil writer/filmmaker, as his assistant director in his film "Poo". Ranjith begun his directorial debut with a feature film titled, $9.50 cents in 2010. The movie was about the journey of Tamil youth in Toronto, as they grapple with a series of events over 24 hours. The movie was well received at the Image Film Festival, in Toronto. In the year 2016, Ranjith wrote "Appu", his second feature and later " Sinamkol" in 2017. Producers being aware of his work immediately jumped on board and helped him to make "Sinamkol". He shot the film in Sri-Lanka in a short span of time. The film left its impact in international film festivals. Ranjith received the best debut filmmaker award at "Calcutta International Cult Film Festival" in 2018 for Sinamkol and the best director award in "Norway Tamil International Film Festival" in 2020. The film also won the best actor award for the lead role in "Norway Tamil International Film Festival". Ranjith, is recently working to shoot his 3rd feature film in Canada.
