Robert C Willey was born in central Texas and grew up one of nine children in Brady and Brownwood Texas. His father was a commercial farmer and his mother was a housewife. After high school he worked as a police officer until he ended up in the Texas Highway Patrol. The Sugarland Express (1974), his only film, used mostly Texas highway patrolmen and Texas Rangers to play the roles of policemen during the filming. Spielberg felt they added to the authenticity of what was a relatively low budget movie.
