Born in Midland, Michigan, and raised in the suburbs of New York City, Robert Gordon became involved from an early age in music, theater and film at an early age. Already comfortable on stage as a child in local little theater productions, by the time he was in high school, he was working in the local educational television studio-first as a camera operator, and then moving through the ranks of sound mixer, tech director and then as a director. Mr. Gordon became familiarized with radio and television station operations, music recording studios, and live concert front of house consoles while majoring in mass communications at the University of Tennessee. His filmmaking experience at that time revolved around the use of vintage Bolex 16mm film cameras and Nagra audiotape recorders. Music recording studios he spent much time in were utilizing analog twenty-four track two-inch reel-to-reel magnetic tape recorders at the time. Mr. Gordon refers to that era as the bad old good old days. After college, Mr. Gordon returned to New York in order to pursue a serious career in television, music, and film. The grim reality of trying to find suitable work that paid a livable salary set in, and he found himself lured into the more lucrative (though less creatively fulfilling) profession of information technology. As his IT career progressed, he Gordon continued to pursue any and all opportunities to stay involved with artistic pursuits-often for little or no compensation beyond food and credits and a sense of fulfillment. He has ever since led a dual life of computer geek by day and creative force in music, video and film by evening and weekend. In 1991, Mr. Gordon relocated from New York to Raleigh, North Carolina, where became involved in the local indie filmmaking scene, working both in front of and behind the camera (and both, for some productions) for a number of years. He is a frequent contributor in the areas of sound design, production mixing, and post-production sound editing. But while sound is his primary area of expertise, Mr. Gordon considers himself a rather eclectic mix of artist and engineer, who also enjoys writing, directing, photography and videography. And he still has that passion for acting that first attracted him as a child. His first stint as writer/director for the short film "Them", confirmed his appetite for leading the creative process of filmmaking. Other things Mr. Gordon enjoys doing in his spare time include playing guitar, composing music, nature photography, vegetarian cooking, surfing and sailing, sports cars, mountain bikes, scuba diving, exploring new Asian restaurants, checking out local bands with friends, and occasionally jumping out of a perfectly good airplane. * January 2014
