From Bangor in North Wales John went to local school's Cae Top and Friars along with his brother and two sisters. His move into filmmaking did not immediately happen after school and came after an early career in the British Army. From 2009-2013, John studied at Bangor University achieving a first class BA(Hons) in Film Studies and then a Distinction in his MA in Filmmaking. John directed a number of short films, both fiction and documentary in English and Welsh. It was while a student and making short films that John achieved early success when he receiving two prestigious RTS awards, a Celtic Media Festival nomination and countless other festival accolades for a number of his short films. In 2013 he directed Curtains, a short documentary film set in a Women's refuge which highlighted domestic abuse against women. The film was featured on BBC Three's Fresh. In 2014, he directed his first television documentary Cysgod Rhyfel (The Shadow of War) for broadcaster S4C, which discusses the issues faced by four former soldiers who suffer with PTSD. John is currently working on a documentary about Afghanistan.
