At 16 she was in the pantomime Cinderella, with Deryk Roy and Christine Nordon. Then in the play Cosh Boy at Swiss Cottage followed by Rene ln Master Crook at the Comedy Theatre, where she was spotted by Brian Desmond Hurst and given the part of Martha Cratchet in his film Scrooge (1951) with Alistair Sim.
