Harlan is a trained composer, mathematician, and data scientist. Over the course of six years, he worked with Benoit Mandelbrot at the Yale University Fractal Geometry Workshops. He writes on the subject of fractal music and authored the chapter entitled "The Nature of Fractal Music" in the World Scientific Publishing memorial volume "Benoit Mandelbrot: A Life in Many Dimensions."
