Mildred Reineberg began performing in summer stock in Mt. Gretna, Pennsylvania near her childhood home of York. Taking the stage name Elaine Ryan, she moved to New York City and performed as Laura in The Glass Menagerie among other roles. After a screen test, she moved to Hollywood where she filmed her only movie, appearing with Shirley Temple and Clifton Webb in Mr. Belvedere Goes to College (1949). When she returned home to Pennsylvania, she reconsidered her future, leaving a promising acting career to become a nun, taking the name of Sister Mary Clare.
