Born in El Paso and raised primarily in the city of San Antonio, Sam Martinez has a passion for both family and Texas. From the age of nine, he's been making short films with friends- each time striving to make something more ambitious and meaningful than the one before. In high school, Sam developed an even deeper fondness for the dramatic arts, video production, and creative writing. He has played numerous characters on the stage including Jonathan Harker (Dracula), Orsino (12th Night), and Tony Kirby (You Can't Take it with You). He was also awarded an honorable mention at the Texas UIL for his portrayal of Nikos (Big Love). During his senior year, The JPS drama department awarded him Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Soap Director. When off the stage, Sam served as the director/principal editor for JPS morning announcements. His spoof of the office entitled "the Studio" won him a "Best in State" award for editing by the Technology Student Association. After high school, Sam attended Baylor University and studied Film and Digital Media Production. There he interned with Baylor Vision and served primarily as a camera operator. However, unable to afford Baylor, Sam returned to SA. He enrolled at Baptist University of the Americas where he went on to earn a bachelors degree in Theological Studies and an associates degree in Cross Cultural Studies. During his time at Baptist University of the Americas, Sam was awarded a Young Maston Scholar designation for his ethical research paper which dealt with the question of content in Christian films. During this time, however, he didn't stop developing his craft. Near the end of his studies at BUA, Sam meet Josue Rodriguez and the two helped create the production company Aretil Creative. Soon they began making experimental short films, music videos, and promo videos- all the while, studying full time. Sam later enrolled at North West Vista Community college and majored in Digital Media and Cinema Production. There he further developed his talents and technical skills. Although, Sam loves writing and directing above all of the other disciplines, he's no stranger to the using cameras, editing, and producing thanks to his training at NWV. Taking advantage of NWV's vast assortment of equipment, Sam has become proficient with a variety of cameras, editing interfaces, and lighting equipment. He's down to one class now and can't wait to graduate. The upcoming short film Blind Date (written by Sam Martinez and Alyssa Thompson) marks Sam and producers Josue Rodriguez, Nancy Perez, and Vanessa Roman's first attempt at getting a movie into film festivals. The short film was shot exclusively in San Antonio and showcases the diverse talent of the Texas Actors Workshop actors. Although made on a budget of less than $650, Blind Date is ambitious in both scope and detail. Sam is also working to complete another short film entitled "Seer" which he wrote and directed for his final project in his directing class. Sam loves the craft and has much to say; he can't wait to "get his stuff out there."
